‘Bridgerton’ Season 5 Set for 2027 as Netflix Breaks the Show’s Two-Year Release Pattern

For the first time, two consecutive seasons will drop in back-to-back calendar years

Netflix made a surprise announcement at its 2026 Upfronts presentation Wednesday: Bridgerton Season 5 is set to premiere in 2027 — breaking the beloved Regency drama’s traditional two-year release cycle for the first time in the show’s history.

Since launching in December 2020 as a pandemic-era phenomenon, Bridgerton has followed a reliable pattern: Season 2 arrived in 2022, Season 3 in 2024, and Season 4 in 2026. Season 5 will shatter that rhythm, arriving just one year after its predecessor.

The accelerated timeline is by design. Netflix began production on Season 5 in March — only weeks after Part 2 of Season 4 debuted on February 26 — marking the quickest turnaround in the show’s run. The previous record was Season 4, which began filming two months after Season 3’s finale dropped.

This season belongs to Francesca Bridgerton. Played by Hannah Dodd, the family’s quiet, introspective middle daughter returns two years after the sudden death of her husband, John Stirling. Resolved to re-enter the marriage mart for practical rather than romantic reasons, Francesca’s carefully constructed plans are upended when Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) — John’s cousin — arrives in London to manage the Kilmartin estate. What follows is a love story defined less by society’s expectations and more by Francesca’s own journey of self-discovery, as she finds herself torn between reason and passion.

The rest of Bridgerton‘s beloved ensemble returns alongside them, including Jonathan Bailey, Simone Ashley, Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Luke Thompson, Luke Newton, Adjoa Andoh, Golda Rosheuvel, and Ruth Gemmell.

Jess Brownell returns as showrunner and executive producer, with Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Tom Verica, and Chris Van Dusen also producing under the Shondaland banner. The eight-episode season is currently filming in London.

Since its debut, Bridgerton has grown into one of Netflix’s most successful global franchises. With Season 5 putting Francesca — long one of the show’s most understated characters — front and center, the series looks poised to deepen its emotional range while keeping its signature Regency flair intact.
