The beloved HBCU drama returns with a new generation of Hillman students and nearly the entire original cast
Netflix’s long-awaited sequel to A Different World is heading to screens this fall, the streamer confirmed Wednesday during its 2026 Upfronts presentation in New York City. The 10-episode single-camera series will return to the halls of the fictional Hillman College, where a new generation of students navigates ambition, identity, and the weight of legacy.
At the center of the story is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of fan-favorite couple Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy). As a Hillman freshman, Deborah must carve out her own identity while living in the long shadow of her parents’ storied time on campus.
The sequel boasts a remarkable reunion of original cast members alongside a fresh ensemble of new students. The full cast includes:

Production wrapped in Atlanta, Georgia, with Pride calling the experience “such a long time in the making,” and expressing pride in the creativity and heart the cast and crew poured into the project.
Originally debuting in 1987 as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, A Different World became a defining portrayal of Black college life and HBCU culture for an entire generation. The Netflix sequel looks to carry that legacy forward — with Hillman College once again open for business this fall.
