Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ series on Disney+ is expanding its cast with the addition of Byron Bowers. Bowers joins Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will star as the titular character.
“Wonder Man” was created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby, making his first appearance in 1964 in “The Avengers” #9. The character, Simon Williams, inherits his father’s munitions business, which struggles against Stark Industries. Williams gains ion-based superpowers and initially battles the Avengers under Baron Zemo’s influence before joining the team.
In addition to Abdul-Mateen, the “Wonder Man” cast includes Demetrius Grosse as Grim Reaper, Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Trevor Slattery, Ed Harris as Neal Saroyan, Lauren Glazier, and Josh Gad. The series will explore the character’s evolution from villain to hero, emphasizing his ionic energy-based powers.
Details about Bowers’ role have not been disclosed.
The series will see episodes directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and Stella Meghie, director of “The Photograph.” Andrew Guest will serve as the head writer. The series is executive produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
Marvel Studios has kept details about the series under wraps, with principal photography already completed. The series is slated for a Disney+ release next year, marking another addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Bowers’ recent credits include roles in “Kimi,” “Irma Vep,” and “Swarm.” He will also appear in the Apple TV+ limited series “Lady in the Lake,” directed by Alma Har’el, alongside Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram.
