Damon Wayans Jr. and Lauren Ashley Smith are set to bring fresh laughs to CBS with their new multi-cam comedy, Overstepping.
Hot on the heels of his recent full-season pickup for Poppa’s House, Wayans Jr. is expanding his footprint at CBS. Through his Two Shakes Entertainment company, co-founded with Kameron Tarlow, Wayans Jr. will executive produce Overstepping alongside CBS Studios.
The upcoming comedy follows a free-spirited woman in her fifties who, after encountering financial setbacks, moves in with her estranged stepdaughter in her twenties. Their unexpected living situation sparks a journey to mend their fractured relationship, blending generational humor with themes of family, resilience, and personal growth.

Overstepping will be penned and executive produced by Lauren Ashley Smith, best known for her work as head writer on HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show. With credits on BET’s The Rundown with Robin Thede and Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Smith brings her comedic flair and expertise to the new series. Currently under a deal with CBS Studios, Smith is also developing a majorette-themed feature film produced by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, and H.E.R., set up at 20th Century.
Wayans Jr.’s Two Shakes Entertainment has been on a steady rise. Besides Poppa’s House, the company is behind the game show Raid the Cage and is working on a firefighter drama titled Ten House for CBS. The studio recently extended its first-look deal with CBS Studios through 2026, further solidifying Wayans Jr.’s role as a mainstay in CBS’s comedy lineup.
As Overstepping enters development, CBS viewers can look forward to Wayans Jr.’s continued contributions, promising relatable humor and heartfelt storytelling with each new project.
