In 2014, Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua joined forces to turn the beloved TV series “The Equalizer” into a heart-pounding vigilante thriller. The film showcased Washington as Robert McCall, a man who takes justice into his own hands to protect the vulnerable and downtrodden. The on-screen chemistry between Washington and Fuqua struck a chord with audiences, leading to the equally successful “The Equalizer 2” in 2018.

Now, nearly a decade after the inception of the franchise, “The Equalizer 3” is primed to mark the end of McCall’s journey. This time, the story takes us to the picturesque landscapes of Southern Italy, where McCall seeks solace and happiness. Denzel Washington offers a glimpse into McCall’s current state, saying, “I don’t want to say he’s found happiness, and I don’t want to give it all away, but he meets someone lovely, he’s in a lovely town, and he seems to be at peace. That seems to be a good place to stop.”
As fans brace themselves for the final chapter, Denzel Washington admits that the longevity of the franchise took him by surprise. “I didn’t know that there were going to be three,” he shares. “Definitely didn’t know that when we did the first one. I didn’t know how it would end.”
Director Antoine Fuqua concurs with Washington, emphasizing the significance of concluding McCall’s story. “This is it,” Fuqua reveals. “Robert McCall, the working-man hero, at some point he’s got to walk away from it. At some point, someone else has to pick up the ball and serve justice. He’s served his justice. He’s in a foreign place, he’s trying to find a home, find a place in the world. That’s really what’s important.”
However, McCall’s quest for a peaceful existence is disrupted when the Mafia enters the picture. As always, McCall’s sense of justice and duty is called upon, leading to high-octane confrontations that are sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Empire magazine’s upcoming Napoleon issue, set for release on August 3, features an exclusive interview with Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua, chronicling their remarkable 10-year journey with Robert McCall, as well as their previous collaborations, including “Training Day.”
“The Equalizer 3” is scheduled to open in theaters in the UK, August 30th and everywhere else September 1. Ahead of its release a new TV spot trailer was released and some new images, check them all out below.
