CBS Cancels "NCIS: Hawai’i" After Three Seasons

In a surprising move, CBS has decided to cancel “NCIS: Hawai’i” after its current third season, making the May 6 season finale also its series finale. This decision marks the end of the fourth installment in the “NCIS” franchise, following the conclusions of “NCIS: New Orleans” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” in recent years.

It’s cancellation also makes NCIS: Hawai’i the shortest run of any series in the franchise so far (excluding the 1-year-old Sydney). The end of the show will also mean CBS won’t be filming a show in the state of Hawaii for the first time since 2010: NCIS: Hawai’i followed Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I. in the Aloha State.

While “NCIS: Hawai’i” bid farewell, the franchise as a whole continues to thrive. CBS recently renewed the original “NCIS” series and is developing a prequel centered on a young Jethro Leroy Gibbs. Additionally, Paramount+ is gearing up for a spinoff featuring the return of Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly. The network also renewed “NCIS: Sydney” for a second season in March.

The cancellation of “NCIS: Hawai’i” was a topic of speculation as it was the last scripted series in the CBS lineup awaiting word on its fate. Despite efforts to negotiate a continuation, including budget cuts, the decision was made to bring the series to an end.

“NCIS: Hawai’i” centered on Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey), the first female Special Agent in Charge of NCIS Pearl Harbor. Alongside her team, Tennant navigated high-stakes crimes involving military personnel and national security while balancing duty to family and country. The cast also featured Alex Tarrant, Noah Mills, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Jason Antoon, Tori Anderson, and Kian Talan, with recurring appearances by LL Cool J from “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Matt Bosack, Jan Nash, Christopher Silber and Larry Teng are the executive producers.

Created by Matt Bosack, Jan Nash, and Christopher Silber, the series offered a unique blend of crime-solving and character dynamics set against the backdrop of Hawaii. However, despite its loyal fanbase and solid performance, the show ultimately fell short of securing another season. NCIS:
