Derek Luke, Amin Joseph, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor Join Hulu’s ‘Southern Bastards’ Pilot

Hulu’s upcoming drama pilot Southern Bastards is rounding out its cast with a wave of notable additions.

Derek Luke, Amin Joseph (Snowfall), Jonathan Tucker (American Hostage), and Ethan Suplee (The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh) have joined the main ensemble, while Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Nickel Boys) comes aboard as a guest star.

The project, from director and executive producer Reinaldo Marcus Green, is an adaptation of the award-winning graphic novel series by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. The pilot is produced under Hulu’s Onyx Collective banner, alongside POV Entertainment, Proximity Media, and Fifth Season.

The series follows a hardened military veteran, Roberta, who returns to Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father. What she discovers is a tightly controlled town riddled with corruption, violence, and a criminal empire tied to a dominant high school football program led by Coach Boss, played by Tim McGraw. The ensemble also includes Kevin Bacon and Erin Kellyman.

Each new cast member steps into key roles within the town’s layered power structure:

  • Joseph plays Hardy Whitworth, a former football standout whose NFL dreams were cut short by injury. Now the sheriff of Craw County, he projects authority and charm while quietly enabling the corruption he helps sustain. Torn between ambition and morality, he remains tied to the system that shaped him.
  • Luke portrays Uncle Lou, a sharp, hustler-minded former tour manager who now treats his nephew’s football career as a business opportunity. Protective yet controlling, he aims to secure financial control while keeping his nephew focused amid the influence of Coach Boss.
  • Ellis-Taylor plays Vernetta, Roberta’s mother, who is frustrated by how the military has treated her daughter and pushes her to reconnect with her estranged father. Though she once distanced herself from Craw County, her daughter’s return pulls her back into its orbit.
  • Tucker takes on Esaw Goings, an assistant coach and enforcer for Coach Boss. A former linebacker dealing with the effects of undiagnosed CTE, Esaw is volatile, loyal, and instrumental in maintaining the town’s criminal underbelly.
  • Suplee plays Eugene “Materhead” Maples, a former offensive lineman turned assistant coach and enforcer. More follower than strategist, he supports Esaw while showing occasional signs of conscience beneath his loyalty to the operation.

The pilot features a creative team that includes a story credit from Nia DaCosta and a teleplay by Bill Dubuque (Ozark). Matt Olmstead serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Jason Aaron, Jason Latour, and Reinaldo Marcus Green. Additional executive producers include Layne Eskridge, Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media.

With its mix of crime, sports culture, and Southern noir storytelling, Southern Bastards continues to build momentum as one of Hulu’s most closely watched drama pilots.
