Eternal Polk and Tharlyn Fox Talk Must-See ‘Gaining Ground’ Documentary [INTERVIEW]

gaining grounds documentary

I had the privilege of watching one of the most impactful conversation starters, the documentary “Gaining Ground: The Fight for Black Land,” directed by the talented Eternal Polk. This eye-opening project takes viewers on an educational journey through the current and historical aspects of black farming in the United States, shining a light on a significant yet often overlooked chapter of American heritage.

Did you know that in the early 20th century, Black Americans owned over 16 million acres of farmland, comprising about 14 percent of all U.S. farmers? However, in stark contrast, the present scenario is deeply troubling, with only one in 100 farmers being Black, and less than 5 million acres remaining in their hands. This shocking decline raises questions about its underlying causes and its profound impact on Black families and their legacies.

The documentary brings to the forefront the challenges faced by black landowners as they grapple with issues such as violence, eminent domain, and government discrimination, all contributing to the loss of their ancestral lands. Moreover, it illuminates a little-known topic— the impact of “Heirs’ Property.” The fight to regain control over this essential resource resonates deeply, and “Gaining Ground” unearths the causes, effects, and ongoing efforts to combat land exploitation.

In candid and insightful conversations with filmmaker Eternal Polk and Tharlyn Fox, the essence of the documentary’s message is explored. “Gaining Ground” not only calls for increased awareness of the history of black farming but also underscores the importance of celebrating, understanding, and improving the experiences of the Black family.
