Netflix is headed straight into Pentagon politics with Trinity, a gripping new eight-episode thriller created by Jed Mercurio (Bodyguard, Line of Duty). The series follows a high-ranking naval officer who becomes romantically entangled with the U.S. Secretary of Defense—only to uncover that he may be at the center of a dangerous and far-reaching conspiracy.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw leads the series as Commander Katherine Decker, a heroic U.S. Navy officer who serves as second-in-command aboard the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the most lethal weapons on the planet. Richard Madden stars opposite her as Webb Preston, the ambitious and charismatic Secretary of Defense with a background in tech and a bold vision for the future—one that some view as a threat.
When Decker and Preston’s relationship deepens, what begins as an alliance soon turns into suspicion, as Decker uncovers secrets that call everything into question—including the safety of the country and her own loyalty.
The project reunites Mercurio and Madden following their acclaimed collaboration on Bodyguard, which earned Madden a Golden Globe and Mercurio an Emmy nomination. This time around, Mercurio returns as showrunner, writer, and executive producer under his Hat Trick Mercurio (HTM) banner, alongside executive producers Jimmy Mulville (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) and Wendy Mericle (Arrow, Willow). Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter) is on board to direct and executive produce the first two episodes.
Mbatha-Raw continues to make waves across TV and film. She currently stars in Apple TV+’s Surface, and her past credits include The Morning Show, Loki, The Girl Before, and Black Mirror’s Emmy-winning episode “San Junipero.” She also has several high-profile films on the way, including Fuze and The Woman in Cabin 10.
Madden is best known for Game of Thrones, Marvel’s Eternals, and Prime Video’s Citadel, in addition to his breakout turn in Bodyguard. He brings his trademark intensity to Trinity as a modern political figure whose tech-forward ideals may be hiding more than ambition.
Production is underway, and Trinity is expected to premiere on Netflix, with a release date to be announced soon.
