As MGM+’s sci-fi horror series ‘From’ is renewed for its its fifth and final season, Harold Perrineau has already found his next lead role. The actor is set to star in Brawlers, a gritty feature film set against the backdrop of Los Angeles’s amateur MMA scene, with retired MMA star Ronda Rousey serving as executive producer.
Details on the story are being kept under wraps. Jonathan Fernandez will direct from his own script in his feature debut, with Andrew Carlberg and Jackie Carr producing. The film has been awarded the California tax incentive and will shoot on location in Los Angeles.
Rousey, credited with helping propel women’s MMA into the mainstream, was active professionally in the sport from 2011 to 2016. Her career included a dominant run in Strikeforce and the UFC, six successful title defenses and a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she became the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in the sport. After MMA she transitioned to WWE, winning the Raw Women’s Championship and headlining WrestleMania 35 in the first women’s main event in the show’s history.
Perrineau, who has starred as Sheriff Boyd Stevens on From since the series launched, is also known for Lost, Oz, The Matrix trilogy, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, Zero Dark Thirty and the Best Man franchise. From is currently in production on its fifth and final season, which is expected to premiere in 2027.
