I Will Survive will capture Gaynor’s incredible 50-year journey in the music industry, from her early beginnings to her rise as one of the most recognizable voices of disco. The film will feature many of Gaynor’s greatest hits, including the iconic I Will Survive, written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris in 1978. The song not only became a dance anthem but a symbol of resilience and empowerment, transcending generations.
Gaynor will contribute a new, original song for the film, which will also touch on her personal struggles, particularly her tumultuous marriage to Simon, who was reportedly controlling during their time together. Reflecting on her career and life, the biopic aims to showcase her resilience in both personal and professional spheres. “It’s an honor to share my journey with the world, and I’m thrilled to work with such an incredible team on this film,” Gaynor shared.
Part of Lifetime’s Voices of a Lifetime slate, the biopic is slated for a 2025 release and joins a lineup dedicated to celebrating iconic figures in music, which also includes Mary J. Blige’s Family Affair and Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story.
Kalukango’s collaboration with Robin Roberts marks a reunion for the two, as the actress also starred in the Emmy-nominated Lifetime film Mahalia. Directed by Alicia K. Harris and written by Njeri Brown and Jane Espenson, I Will Survive supports Lifetime’s Broader Focus initiative, which highlights female leadership across production roles. Robin Roberts, Linda Berman, and Gloria Gaynor will serve as executive producers, with Betsy Schechter co-producing under Rock’n Robin Productions.
With Kalukango and Gross leading the way, I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story is poised to be a powerful tale of triumph, music, and enduring strength, making it a must-watch for anyone inspired by Gaynor’s groundbreaking career.
