Jasmine Cephas Jones Joins HBO’s ‘Lanterns’

Jasmine Cephas Jones is stepping into the DC Universe. The Origin and Blindspotting actress has joined HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series, the prestige comic drama based on the Green Lantern franchise.

She joins the previously announced cast, which includes Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Nicole Ari Parker, Kelly Macdonald, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jason Ritter, Garret Dillahunt, Sherman Augustus, and J. Alphonse Nicholson.

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Green Lantern veteran Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic peacekeepers investigating a murder in the American heartland. What starts as a grounded crime turns into a sprawling conspiracy with cosmic implications. Think True Detective with power rings.

In a key guest-starring role, Cephas Jones will portray Young Bernadette, the earlier version of Nicole Ari Parker’s character—John Stewart’s fiercely resilient mother. Described as a big-picture thinker and the ultimate family fixer, Bernadette is the kind of woman who demands greatness not just from herself, but from everyone around her. Cephas Jones is expected to bring emotional depth and presence to this pivotal piece of Stewart’s backstory.

The series comes from Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comic writer Tom King (Mister Miracle). HBO is producing the eight-episode series alongside Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Mundy serves as showrunner, with Lindelof and King co-writing and executive producing. Directors include James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.

Jasmine Cephas Jones continues to showcase her versatility on both screen and stage. She recently starred in Ava DuVernay’s Origin and earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her performance in Starz’s Blindspotting. She also won an Emmy for her role in #FreeRayshawn, and a Grammy for her work on the Hamilton cast recording.

Outside of acting, she’s a recording artist in her own right. Her debut album Phoenix is available on all streaming platforms, and she voices the character “Swan” on Warriors, a concept album by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis for Atlantic Records.
