Jordan Fisher is heading back to the dance floor.
The Broadway and screen star is set to star in and produce I Won’t Dance, a YA sports romantic comedy centered on the high-stakes world of competitive ballroom dancing. The project marks the feature directorial debut of Christine Lakin, with a script from veteran dancer and writer Allison Johnson.
Fisher will play Xavier, described as the charismatic “bad boy of the ballroom,” opposite Alaina, his longtime rival. The story follows the two fiercely competitive dancers who have spent years trying to outshine each other, only to be forced into an uneasy partnership when their respective dance partners walk out just weeks before the National Rising Star Championship. With everything on the line, the pair must decide whether to compete together—or risk losing everything they’ve worked for separately. What begins as a reluctant alliance quickly evolves into something neither expected.
The film leans into the enemies-to-lovers space within a competitive sports framework, drawing comparisons to recent breakout romance-driven sports storytelling like Heated Rivalry.
Production is slated to begin in February 2027, with choreography led by Sharna Burgess and international production support from Hulahoop Media and Film! Canary Islands handling production services. Lokia will oversee international sales.
Behind the camera, Alexandra Olivia Engelson is producing alongside Toni D’Antonio, Samantha Bowen, Allison Johnson, and Burgess, with Fisher also serving as producer. Rosie Cruz will executive produce.
The project arrives as Fisher continues to build a wide-ranging career across stage and screen. He is currently starring as Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, following acclaimed Broadway turns in Hadestown, Moulin Rouge!, Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and Sweeney Todd. On screen, he is known for roles in To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Work It, and Pixar’s Turning Red, as well as appearances in The Flash and live musical broadcasts like Rent: Live and Grease: Live.
He is also set to appear in the upcoming animated musical Brave Knight, alongside Sydney Agudong, Skylar Astin, Meg Donnelly, and Peyton List.
