After years of false starts, there is finally some forward movement on Jordan Peele’s long-delayed fourth feature.
According to Puck’s Matt Belloni, Peele has completed a script for his untitled follow-up to 2022’s Nope, with Universal Pictures still on board as the studio. A release date and casting announcements are not expected for a few more months, but the news marks the most encouraging update on the project in years.
“I’m told there’s a script, and Universal is on board, but news of a release date or casting isn’t expected for a few months,” Belloni wrote.
The road to this point has been a long one. Peele reportedly scrapped an original script he had been developing to shoot in late 2023. Two additional scripts were developed and abandoned in 2024 and 2025, leaving the project without a clear path forward. The film was at one point dated for Christmas 2024, then moved to October 2026, before being pulled from Universal’s release schedule entirely. It currently holds no set date.
During that stretch, Peele also got involved with Hideo Kojima’s upcoming horror game OD, and his production banner Monkeypaw Productions went through two rounds of layoffs. The company’s last greenlit film, the sports horror Him, underperformed at the box office last year.
Peele’s deal with Universal runs through 2030, though it was recently pared down from its original terms. His three films as director, Get Out, Us and Nope, were released over a span of five years. His next project is shaping up to be his most expensive to date, with a reported budget in the $90 million range. At the current pace, it will likely be six or seven years between releases.
