Keith David to Replace The Late Lance Reddick in Role of Commander Zavala in 'Destiny 2'

Game developer Bungie has officially announced that voice over actor Keith David will be taking over the iconic role of Commander Zavala in Destiny 2’s expansion, “The Final Shape.” This news comes following the unexpected passing of the Lance Reddick earlier this year.

Destiny is set in a “mythic science fiction” universe where players assume the role of Guardians, defenders of Earth’s last safe city. Empowered by the Light granted by the celestial being known as the Traveler, Guardians embark on interstellar quests to protect humanity from various alien threats. The franchise is known for its multiplayer “shared-world” environment and role-playing game elements, offering players an immersive and dynamic experience.

Commander Zavala has been an integral part of the Destiny franchise since its inception, and Bungie expressed their commitment to continuing his story in the upcoming expansion. The Destiny 2 team released a statement on Bungie’s website titled “Thank you, Commander: The Future of Zavala’s Journey,” acknowledging Reddick’s contributions and the significance of his portrayal.

“In his decade-long tenure as the English voice actor of Commander Zavala, Lance Reddick’s passion and professionalism left an indelible mark on the Destiny community. His iconic voice guided Guardians through some of the franchise’s most intense moments, and his impact will forever be etched into the heart of our community.”

Keith David, in a video shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), expressed his honor and enthusiasm for taking on the role of Zavala. He highlighted the character’s integrity and sense of family, qualities that resonated with him and were masterfully captured by Reddick.

“It is my intention to continue that work and uphold the integrity that Lance portrayed so wonderfully,” David stated.

Bungie assured fans that Reddick’s existing in-game lines will remain unchanged in the upcoming release, ensuring continuity and respect for his contribution to the character.

David’s connection with Bungie goes beyond Destiny, as he previously voiced the character Arbiter in the 2004 game Halo 2. The company expressed their excitement for the collaboration and the unique qualities that David brings to the role.

“Bungie is thrilled to continue our partnership with Keith, a relationship that began during the Halo era. We anticipate Keith’s portrayal of Commander Zavala will add a fresh and compelling dimension to the character’s journey.”
