KJ Smith, acclaimed actress (Sistas) and proud HBCU alum, is using her platform to make a difference for minority students interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In a recent interview, Smith opened up about her partnership with Pepsi’s “Taste of Tomorrow” program, a scholarship initiative that allocates $350,000 to support students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
In a recent interview, Smith reflected on her role in the initiative. “I’m honored to be an ambassador,” she said. “God blessed me with a platform, and I want to use it to speak to students, particularly at HBCUs, to let them know about opportunities that can change their lives. This initiative is helping Black students elevate, and I’m so proud to be part of it.”
The Taste of Tomorrow program provides critical financial support to HBCU students, something Smith understands firsthand. “When I was in college at FAMU, I didn’t know about scholarships like this. I struggled financially, working multiple jobs while trying to stay focused on my studies,” Smith shared. “That’s why I’m passionate about this initiative. It’s about giving students the resources they need to thrive, from tuition to everyday expenses.”
Smith encourages students to seize this opportunity by applying before the December deadline. “The scholarship process is simple, and the impact is huge,” she explained. “PepsiCo is putting their money where their mouth is, and I want every student to know this support is available.”
As a vocal advocate for higher education and individuality, Smith is using her platform to inspire students to carve their own paths. “When I was younger, I didn’t choose my own journey. I followed what my parents and siblings wanted for me. That’s why I tell students: follow your passion. Be authentic, and don’t shrink yourself to fit into someone else’s expectations.”
Smith also highlighted the importance of spreading awareness. “If this opportunity doesn’t apply to you, share it with someone who might benefit. The power of social media and word-of-mouth can help us reach students who need this support.”
Smith credits her time at FAMU with shaping her into the person she is today. “HBCUs aren’t for the weak,” she said with a smile. “They push you to go from good to excellent. They challenge you to discover who you are and what you’re capable of.”
Reflecting on the struggles HBCU students often face, Smith acknowledged the financial and mental health challenges of college life. “It’s not just about tuition,” she said. “It’s about giving students peace of mind so they can focus on their studies, join clubs, network, and take advantage of everything college has to offer.”
Smith’s message to students is simple: “Bring your own flavor to everything you do. Whether it’s acting, STEM, or anything else, your individuality is your greatest asset. And when you pair that with the resources from programs like Taste of Tomorrow, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.”
