Lionsgate Sets Release Date for L.A. Riots Backdropped '1992' -- Snoop Dogg Joins as Executive Producer

Updated with trailer:

Lionsgate has announced that the action crime thriller “1992” will hit theaters on Labor Day weekend, August 30th.

Directed by Ariel Vromen and written by Sascha Penn and Vromen, “1992” stars Tyrese Gibson, Ray Liotta, and Scott Eastwood. The film delves into the tumultuous events of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, marking one of Liotta’s final on-screen appearance, dedicated to his memory. Also with the release date announced, Snoop Dogg also joins as executive producer through his Death Row Pictures banner.

“In 1992, Mercer (Gibson) strives to rebuild his life and reconnect with his son (Christopher A’mmanuel) amidst the backdrop of the L.A. uprising triggered by the Rodney King verdict. Concurrently, another father and son duo (Liotta and Eastwood) navigate their strained relationship while planning a risky heist for valuable catalytic converters from Mercer’s workplace. As Los Angeles descends into chaos, these families collide, heightening tensions and drama,” states the synopsis.

The cast includes Clé Bennett, Dylan Arnold, Michael Beasley, Ori Pfeffer, Tosin Morohunfola, and Oleg Taktarov, with a screenplay adapted by Penn and Vromen from Penn’s story. The film is produced by Andreas Rommel, Maurice Fadida, Penn, and Adam Kolbrenner.

Reflecting on his involvement, Snoop Dogg remarked, “1992 captures a significant moment in L.A. history—a time when everything in my life was coming together while the city was coming apart. Ariel has crafted a film that resonates deeply with me, from my early days in ‘Deep Cover’ to my journey with Tyrese in ‘Baby Boy.’ Releasing this under Death Row Pictures feels right, as it embodies the essence of ’90s L.A. culture.”

Tyrese Gibson expressed gratitude for both Snoop Dogg’s participation and the opportunity to work alongside Ray Liotta in his final role: “Ray Liotta left an indelible mark on us all during this film. His performance in ‘1992’ is a testament to his talent and dedication.”

Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, praised Gibson and acknowledged Snoop Dogg’s personal connection to the material, underscoring Death Row Pictures’ perfect fit for the project.

“1992” joins a slate of wide releases on August 30th, including Sony/Blumhouse’s horror “They Listen,” Showbiz Direct Distribution’s “Reagan” starring Dennis Quaid, and Roadside Attractions’ thriller “City of Dreams.”

With its poignant narrative and powerhouse cast, “1992” promises a compelling cinematic experience this summer.
