The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) Honors has announced two new honorees for its 7th annual ceremony: legendary actress Marla Gibbs, who will receive the Hollywood Legacy Award, and rising star Aaron Pierre, recognized for his captivating performances in film and television. These honorees join an illustrious lineup that includes previously announced recipients Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Giancarlo Esposito, and Keke Palmer.
The event, taking place on February 17, 2025, at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, will celebrate the achievements of these artists while spotlighting the community of Altadena and its extraordinary contributions to Black history and culture. Presented by NICE CROWD, the ceremony will be hosted by actress and comedian Zainab Johnson.
This year’s ABFF Honors will include a special tribute to Altadena, a community celebrated for its resilience, creativity, and influence on the arts and activism. Jeff and Nicole Friday, NICE CROWD’s CEO and president, emphasized the importance of honoring both the individual honorees and the collective legacy of Altadena.
“Altadena’s history embodies the strength, solidarity, and commitment to excellence that we celebrate at the American Black Film Festival,” they shared. “By uplifting this historic community, we hope to inspire creativity and foster support for a vibrant cultural future.”
Marla Gibbs, best known for her roles in The Jeffersons and 227, has built an extraordinary career spanning decades. A five-time Emmy nominee and NAACP Image Award winner, she is also an activist and entrepreneur who has championed diversity in entertainment both on and off-screen.
Aaron Pierre continues to rise as one of Hollywood’s most promising talents. With standout roles in Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King, HBO Max’s Lanterns, and The Underground Railroad, Pierre represents the next generation of Black excellence in storytelling.
ABFF Honors, launched in 2016, is an annual gala recognizing Black artists who have made significant contributions to the motion picture and television industry. Executive producers Jeff and Nicole Friday (NICE CROWD) lead the event alongside dePasse Jones Entertainment and Rikki Hughes (Magic Lemonade). Sponsors for this year include Cadillac, Ally, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and the California Film Commission.
With its tribute to Altadena and a star-studded slate of honorees, the 2025 ABFF Honors continues its tradition of spotlighting achievements that inspire and uplift the Black community while championing its stories and legacy.
