Michaela Coel, the acclaimed creator of I May Destroy You, is reuniting with HBO and the BBC for her next major project, First Day On Earth. This new ten-part drama series marks Coel’s return to television, where she will serve as both the writer and lead actor.
Coel describes First Day On Earth as “another very personal story,” reflecting her deep connection to the material. The series introduces viewers to Henri, a British novelist facing a creative and personal crossroads. Struggling with a stagnant career and an unfulfilling relationship, Henri is presented with an opportunity to work on a film in Ghana, her parents’ homeland. The trip offers her a chance to reconnect with her estranged father and explore her heritage. However, upon arrival, Henri discovers that neither the job nor her father are what she expected. This unexpected journey forces her to confront danger, hypocrisy, and shattered illusions while forging new friendships and ultimately redefining her identity.
First Day On Earth is produced by Various Artists Limited (VAL), a company co-founded by Jesse Armstrong, creator of Succession, and his Peep Show collaborator Sam Bain, along with former Channel 4 executives Phil Clarke and Roberto Troni. The production also involves A24, known for its distinctive and critically acclaimed films.
Coel, who previously collaborated with VAL on I May Destroy You, is also working with A24 on her upcoming film . She will executive produce the series alongside Jesse Armstrong, Phil Clarke, and Roberto Troni, with additional production oversight by Jo McClellan for the BBC and Piers Wenger for A24. Filming is scheduled to begin next year.
Expressing her excitement, Coel said, “I am delighted to be working with VAL, HBO, and the BBC again, and to partner with A24. Thanks to all of their combined taste, care, and expertise, I feel our show is in great hands. First Day On Earth is another very personal story for me, which I hope will engage viewers from all over the world. I can’t wait for audiences to join Henri on her journey.”
Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, praised Coel’s storytelling, saying, “Michaela’s words have the ability to transport the reader like no other. I am thrilled to continue the conversation that began with I May Destroy You, alongside our collaborators at VAL, A24, and the BBC. With Henri as our guide, First Day On Earth is as lyrical as it is visceral in its exploration of the idea of home.”
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, added, “Michaela is one of those exceptional talents whose work I have long admired. I May Destroy You is one of the reasons I wanted to join the BBC. In First Day On Earth, Michaela has created another unmissable series – truly original, heartfelt, and poetic storytelling that only Michaela can deliver. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
