Mike Epps to Star in Netflix Comedy Series ‘My Father’s Son,’ Inspired by Comedian CP’s Life

Mike Epps, one of Netflix’s most popular stand-ups and the star of its sitcom The Upshaws, is expanding his relationship with the streamer via My Father’s Son, a new comedy series he will star in and executive produce alongside Chris “Comedian CP” Powell, the rising Detroit stand-up whose life inspired the project, Deadline reports.

The series is described as a father-son story. Plot details are being kept under wraps. Epps exec produces alongside his producing partner Niles Kirchner, Bob Teitel at State Street, and Maurice Williams, who also serves as writer and showrunner. Doug Banker exec produces via Five All in the Fifth, as do Trevor Engelson of Underground and Comedian CP himself.

The project has gone through multiple iterations before landing in its current form. It was initially set up as a live-action series at HBO Max, with Powell attached to headline and co-write it as his own story, before moving to Netflix for development as an animated series. The current version, with Epps starring and Powell’s life as the inspiration, is back to live-action.

Epps is currently on his We Them Ones comedy tour and recently released his Netflix special Delusional, which premiered January 27 to his strongest launch on the platform to date, drawing nearly four million views in its first week. It was his fifth special for Netflix, a relationship that has produced 20.4 million views across his specials since Netflix began publishing its What We Watched viewership reports in 2023. Epps won the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for The Upshaws, which earned 10 nominations overall.

Comedian CP most recently released the special Sunday After Six on BET after it premiered on Veeps. He co-produced and appeared in Diarra From Detroit and How to Die Alone, with additional credits including Empire and Detroiters, and will next appear in Prime Video’s Barbershop series.
