Prime Video Delays Donald Glover, Maya Erskine’s ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Reboot Til 2024

Mr. and Mrs. Smith Reboot

Due to the on-going WGA and SAG strike, Amazon Prime Video has pushed its ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ reboot series into 2024. The series which is led by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine was originally slated to premiere sometime in November. However it was announced earlier today that the Mr. and Mrs. Smith reboot will premiere early 2024.

Last week, Glover — along with many other top producers — had his overall deal at Amazon suspended amid the strikes. One studio chief explained: “If you were in active post or production on something and willing to work [in a non-writing capacity], we’d keep paying you. If you didn’t have anything or didn’t want to work, we stopped.”

The “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” reboot is a modern update of the 2005 film that featured Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as married assassins assigned to target each other. Donald Glover’s involvement in the cast was confirmed in February 2021. Initially, it was reported that he would be starring alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, but she departed the project in September 2021 due to creative differences. Maya Erskine joined the series in April 2022, completing the dynamic duo.

Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano, also star in the series.

Glover and Erskine take the lead as John and Jane, a married couple whose lives become increasingly complicated when they are recruited by a mysterious spy agency. As part of his overall deal with Amazon, Glover serves as the series’ co-creator and executive producer, working alongside Francesca Sloane, who also takes on the crucial role of showrunner.

The concept of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” has been explored twice before this upcoming series. It first made its debut as a short-lived CBS series in 1996, starring Scott Bakula and Maria Bello. Nearly a decade later, the story was reinvented as a romantic action comedy film directed by Doug Liman and written by Simon Kinberg. The film follows a bored upper-middle-class couple who discovers that they are rival assassins assigned to eliminate each other. Released on June 10, 2005, the film garnered mixed reviews from critics but proved to be a box office success, grossing $487 million worldwide.

In addition to his starring role, Glover also takes on the responsibilities of co-creator and executive producer under his overall deal with Amazon Studios. Francesca Sloane joins him as co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner. The series is also supported by executive producers Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer from New Regency. With Amazon Studios backing the project, viewers can expect high production values and a top-notch viewing experience.

‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ is set to premiere on Prime Video in November, and the teaser offers a tantalizing glimpse of what’s in store for viewers. The footage features Glover’s character, John, alongside Erskine’s Jane, standing together in an elevator, followed by a shot of them sharing a meal on a park bench. These glimpses hint at the complex dynamics and thrilling adventures that await this intriguing couple.

The teaser not only offers a glimpse into the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” reboot but also reveals other exciting release dates for Prime Video’s upcoming lineup. September will bring the highly anticipated second season of “The Wheel of Time” and the spin-off series “Gen V” from “The Boys.” October will see the premiere of Jamie Foxx’s legal drama “The Burial,” while December will bring the second season of “Reacher.”
