Netflix has pulled the plug on “My Dad the Bounty Hunter” after two seasons and 19 episodes. The animated series, co-created by Everett Downing Jr. and Patrick Harpin, featured a star-studded voice cast, including Laz Alonso, Yvonne Orji, Priah Ferguson, and JeCobi Swain. Despite its intriguing premise and strong cast, the show won’t be making a return trip to space.

“My Dad the Bounty Hunter” followed the adventures of the galaxy’s toughest bounty hunter, a man who kept his dangerous profession a secret from his family on Earth. The plot thickened when his two kids accidentally stowed away on one of his missions, discovering their dad’s true, intergalactic occupation. This blend of action and comedy, combined with a heartfelt family storyline, made it a unique addition to Netflix’s lineup.
The series enjoyed decent viewership, securing a spot on Netflix’s global top 10 for English-language series the week after its second season premiere. It also appeared twice in Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series following its first season release in February 2023. Over 10 months, season one amassed 86.5 million viewing hours worldwide, while season two garnered 26.7 million hours in just three and a half months.
Despite its popularity, speculation about the show’s future grew due to Netflix’s silence after the second season debuted in August 2023. What’s on Netflix first reported the cancellation, which comes amid a broader trend at Netflix of scaling back original programming for kids and families. Other animated series, such as “Ada Twist, Scientist,” “Ridley Jones,” “Spirit Rangers,” and “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,” have also been discontinued.
“My Dad the Bounty Hunter” is yet another casualty of Netflix’s evolving content strategy, which has seen a noticeable shift away from family-oriented shows. While the series carved out a loyal following with its unique premise and stellar voice cast, it ultimately couldn’t escape the broader changes in Netflix’s programming priorities.
