Netflix Cancels ‘Sweet Magnolias’ After Five Seasons, Greenlights New Series From the Same Creative Team

Netflix has canceled Sweet Magnolias, the romantic drama starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, after five seasons. But the news isn’t all bad for fans of the show’s creative team: the streamer has simultaneously greenlit a new series from executive producer and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, with Swisher set to executive produce and star.

The new project, Ladies of the House, is loosely based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel and, like Sweet Magnolias, centers on three women navigating life together. The story follows a winery owner’s wife and two adult daughters after his unexpected death, as they work through their own conflicts with each other while facing challenges to the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives. Anderson returns as showrunner and executive produces alongside Swisher and Kate Gordon under their Rolling Clover banner, along with Black Label Media.

The cancellation comes down largely to numbers. Sweet Magnolias Season 5 debuted June 11 and drew 2.8 million views in its opening week, a 30% drop from Season 4’s premiere week, a decline on the steeper end for Netflix series this year, though the season did climb to 3.5 million views in its first full week before falling out of the Top 10 after three weeks. Notably, Netflix hadn’t commissioned a Season 6 writers’ room ahead of time, as it typically does for shows it plans to keep going.

With Anderson and Swisher’s new project already gaining momentum internally, the choice reportedly came down to renewing Sweet Magnolias for a sixth and final season or shifting the creative team’s focus to Ladies of the House. Netflix chose the latter. The decision came right up against the wire: the options on the Sweet Magnolias cast were allowed to lapse Thursday night, the same night Ladies of the House was picked up, with the cancellation following the next day.

The timing leaves Sweet Magnolias without a proper series finale, a disappointment for fans who were hoping for a conclusive final season (an Annie and Ty reconciliation likely chief among their wishes). The Season 5 finale ended on the show’s usual margarita toast among the three leads, without any major twists. Asked in June whether the finale was built to double as a potential series-ender, Anderson said the show always aims to balance open questions with emotional payoff. “I think maybe in some cases, the emotional satisfaction and the joy is greater than the open questions, but the open questions are certainly there, and we certainly have big thoughts about, if we are lucky enough to get another season, the stories that we will tell,” she said.

Following the cancellation news, the show’s writers posted a farewell message to fans on the show’s Instagram account: “All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours goes. Sweet Magnolias is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix,” they wrote, thanking the cast, crew, producers, Netflix, and fans.

Since debuting in 2020, Sweet Magnolias has drawn more than 100 million views and landed in Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10 fourteen times across more than 60 countries, part of the streamer’s slate of comfort-food, feel-good programming.

Anderson and Swisher are now turning their focus to Ladies of the House. “I’m thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with JoAnna and Netflix,” Anderson said. “When Jo shared the novel with me, I immediately saw the foundation for a series centered on three women grappling with the complexities of family, friendship, and romance, the kind of stories Jo and I most enjoy telling. I cannot wait to share the Richardson women and their world with Netflix’s global audience.”

Swisher, who has described the novel as a modern retelling of Sense and Sensibility, said she fell for the material immediately. “From the moment I read Lauren Edmondson’s Ladies of the House, I fell completely in love with Daisy, Cricket and Wallis: their relationships, their messiness, their strength, and most of all, their heart,” she said. “Netflix has been my creative home for the past seven years, and I couldn’t imagine a better place, or a better team, to tell this story.”
