A new Sesame Street film is officially in the works at Netflix, part of the streamer’s continued push into preschool programming.
The movie is currently in development from Sesame Workshop and Rideback, the production company run by Netflix film chairman Dan Lin. No plot details, cast, or release timeline have been disclosed yet.
If it moves forward, the film would mark the franchise’s first feature since 1999’s The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, which itself followed 1985’s Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird, meaning it’s been more than a quarter-century since Sesame Street last hit the big screen.
The film news comes alongside a broader expansion of the Sesame Street partnership between Netflix and Sesame Workshop, who have extended their series deal through Season 62. Season 57’s fourth volume premieres November 23, with Volumes 5 and 6 to follow in 2027. The CGI spinoff series Mecha Builders also lands on Netflix October 26.
The announcement is part of a larger preschool and kids slate Netflix unveiled Thursday, which also includes a new Gabby’s Dollhouse spinoff, a Puppy Pirates series, and new games through Netflix Playground. The push comes after kids and family content accounted for 15% of Netflix’s total viewership in the first half of 2026.
