Netflix has released the first teaser for Umthetho, a new South African drama series premiering August 14, 2026. The eight-episode series is a local adaptation of the Brazilian Netflix drama Brotherhood, known in Portuguese as Irmandade, which ran for two seasons beginning in 2019.
The series centers on Mbali, a sharp young public prosecutor whose world unravels when she is pulled into a ruthless prison syndicate run by her own brother, Moses. Caught between her duty to the law and her loyalty to family, she is forced to work alongside him to protect their younger brother, Sphelele, from the syndicate’s reach. The Brazilian original, set in Sao Paulo in the mid-1990s, earned a reputation for its tense, morally complicated storytelling, and Black Brain Pictures has transplanted that central sibling-versus-syndicate conflict into a distinctly South African setting.
Nqobile Nunu Khumalo leads the cast as Mbali, with Tony Kgoroge as Moses and Given Stuurman as Sphelele. They are joined by Sindi Dlathu, Obed Baloyi, Ernest Msibi, Molefi Monaisa, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, SK Khoza, Lungelo Madondo, Mandla Gaduka and Herald Khumalo.
The series is produced by Black Brain Pictures, the production house behind DiepCity, Lockdown and The Black Door. Mandla N, Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall serve as directors, with Mandla N and Melissa Nayimuli as creative directors. Jose Domingos serves as head writer alongside Rami Nhlapo, Boitumelo Masemola and Makanaka Mavengere.
The announcement arrives at a strong moment for South African scripted content on the platform. The Polygamist, a 22-episode South African supernovela that premiered June 12, accumulated 19.1 million viewing hours shortly after release and landed at number four on Netflix’s global non-English TV chart, topping charts in both South Africa and Nigeria. Established titles including Blood & Water, Fatal Seduction and Unseen have further built the platform’s appetite for South African storytelling.
Umthetho premieres on Netflix on August 14, 2026.
