Netflix has officially renewed the hit series ‘Supacell’ for a second season, marking another success in what has been an impressive 2024 for Netflix UK. The streaming giant has seen a string of hits from its UK division, with shows like ‘Baby Reindeer’, ‘Fool Me Once’, and ‘The Gentlemen’ leading the charge as the U.S. arm of Netflix contends with production delays caused by last year’s Hollywood strikes.
‘Supacell’ has been a standout among these successes, earning critical acclaim both in the UK and internationally. The show currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is on track to receive a Certified Fresh designation if the positive reviews continue. Notably, the series has been praised for its thoughtful exploration of Black issues, including its focus on Sickle Cell disease, a topic that creator Rapman has highlighted as particularly important to him.
The announcement of the renewal came on August 13, 2024, via Netflix’s social media channels. The cast and crew shared the exciting news in an Instagram video, accompanied by a renewal poster and key artwork, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come in Season 2.
In our previous interview with Rapman, the show’s creator, he previously indicated that the future of ‘Supacell’ would depend on its performance, telling us that while the decision was out of his hands, he was optimistic given the show’s growing traction worldwide. “The more people that watch it, the more likely we will get a second season, right? So you gotta keep on running up the numbers. Keep on spreading the word. Tell someone who hasn’t watched it to watch,” he said.
In its first week, ‘Supacell’ debuted at the number 2 spot on Netflix’s TV top 10, just below ‘Bridgerton’ season 3, garnering 33.5 million hours watched, equating to 6.4 million views. Over six weeks, the show amassed a total of 174.4 million hours viewed globally, translating to 33.4 million views.
As Rapman teased, Season 2 of ‘Supacell’ is set to delve deeper into the lives of the characters now that they’ve had their powers for some time. The creator has envisioned a three-season arc for the series, with the first season serving as an origin story akin to ‘Batman Begins’. While many plotlines were neatly wrapped by the end of the first season, the post-credits scene hinted at more to come, including the fates of characters like Jasmine and Sharleen, who were last seen in captivity at a facility in South London.
Fans can look forward to exploring unresolved storylines in Season 2, including Michael’s mission to the future, the fate of Krazy following his shocking twist, and the whereabouts of Dionne. Rapman has also hinted at new developments, including his aspirations to work on a new movie.
As ‘Supacell’ continues to ride the wave of its success, it remains a key player in Netflix UK’s strong lineup, reinforcing the division’s growing influence within the streaming platform. Fans eagerly await the next chapter in this thrilling series, with high expectations for what lies ahead.
