Lionsgate has announced a change in the release date for its upcoming psychological horror film ‘Never Let Go,’ starring Oscar winner Halle Berry and directed by Alexandre Aja. Originally slated for release on September 27, the film will now hit theaters a week earlier, on September 20.
Directed by Aja, known for his work on ‘Crawl’ and ‘The Hills Have Eyes,’ ‘Never Let Go’ tells the chilling story of a mother, played by Berry, who must protect her twin sons from a malevolent force. The family stays physically connected, even using ropes to tether themselves together. But when one of the boys begins to doubt the reality of the threat, their protective bond is shattered, leading to a terrifying fight for survival.
The film’s cast includes Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins as Berry’s twin sons, with supporting roles played by Matthew Kevin Anderson, Christin Park, and Stephanie Lavigne.
This strategic move by Lionsgate comes as Sony and Apple Studios push back the release of ‘Wolfs,’ a noir comedy featuring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, to a limited release. This shift provides ‘Never Let Go’ with a wider window for audiences before the anticipated October blockbuster, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ debuts on October 4 from Warner Bros.
‘Never Let Go’ now shares its new release date with other major titles, including Paramount Animation’s ‘Transformers One’ and MUBI’s horror film ‘The Substance,’ starring Demi Moore.
The shift to September 20 also clears the way for Lionsgate’s other major release, Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis,’ which remains scheduled for September 27. Additionally, ‘Never Let Go’ avoids competing directly with Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Wild Robot’ and IFC’s ‘Azrael,’ which are also set for release on that date.
Produced by 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine, along with Aja, the film’s screenplay was penned by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby. Halle Berry, Holly Jeter, Daniel Clarke, Emily Morris, Christopher Woodrow, and Connor DiGregorio serve as executive producers.
This isn’t Berry’s first foray into the realm of horror and suspense, having starred in notable titles such as “Gothika,” “The Rich Man’s Wife,” and “The Call.” Speaking about her role in “Never Let Go,” Berry expressed her excitement, citing the film’s unique storyline and her passion for adrenaline-fueled projects.
Lionsgate, in association with Media Capital Technologies, 21 Laps, and HalleHolly Productions, presents ‘Never Let Go,’ which is set to deliver a suspenseful and heart-pounding cinematic experience when it premieres on September 20.
