Nia Long and Storm Reid to star in Searching sequel for Sony’s Stage 6 Films.
The film however isn’t a direct sequel to the original film, but a next installment within the Searching franchise.
Aneesh Chaganty made his directorial debut with the 2018 original thriller film. It was written by Chaganty and Sev Ohanian and set entirely on computer screens and smartphones. The film followed a father (John Cho) trying to find his missing 16-year-old daughter (Michelle La) with the help of a police detective (Debra Messing). It is the first mainstream Hollywood thriller headlined by an Asian-American actor.
The plot for the Searching sequel hasn’t been revealed but it will feature a new set of characters where the story plays out on the screens of the characters’ devices in the Screenlife format. It will follow the trend of directorial debuts. Like the original, Searching 2, Nick Johnson and Will Merrick will make their directing debut on the film. Merrick and Johnson who were part of the editorial team on the first movie also wrote the screenplay, which is based on a story by Ohanian and Chaganty.
Joaquim de Almeida, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Daniel Henney, Megan Suri and Tim Griffin are rounding out the cast. Natalie Qasabian, Chaganty, Sev Ohanian, and Timur Bekmambetov will produce.
It is starting production in the spring.
