Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren are set to headline the inaugural Broadway rendition of Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed musical, The Last Five Years, slated to debut in spring 2025. The production will be under the direction of Tony nominee Whitney White, recognized for her work on Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.

The Last Five Years, which premiered off-Broadway in 2002, has garnered a dedicated fanbase over the years. It chronicles the five-year relationship between rising author Jamie and aspiring actress Cathy, exploring the complexities and tribulations of their love and dreams diverging over time.

Whitney White expressed her enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The Last Five Years is one of the greatest original American musicals in the canon. I fell in love with this musical many years ago as a student at Northwestern and still consider it a beautiful exercise in making time feel consequential.”

Nick Jonas, known for his Broadway roles in Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, will portray Jamie. Adrienne Warren, a Tony Award winner for her portrayal of Tina Turner in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, will play Cathy. Both actors will be presenters at the upcoming Tony Awards.

Jason Robert Brown shared his journey with the musical, recalling, “On June 15, 1999, I wrote the first song for a new project, not knowing where it would lead. For twenty-five years, I have let The Last Five Years guide me, from our first production in Skokie in 2001 to our Off-Broadway premiere, a film adaptation, and countless productions worldwide. To have Nick and Adrienne taking on these roles is a composer’s dream come true, and Whitney’s extraordinary vision is the hope of every playwright.”

The musical features beloved numbers such as “The Next Ten Minutes,” “A Miracle Would Happen/When You Come Home to Me,” “Shiksa Goddess,” and “Still Hurting.” White emphasized the timelessness and relatability of the story, saying, “This is a story about artists falling in and out of love and what happens when something has to come to an end. The heartbreak at the center of the show walks hand in hand with abundant love and possibility.”

Nick Jonas’s last Broadway appearance was in 2012, while Adrienne Warren’s last performance on Broadway was in Tina. Both are set to bring their dynamic talents to this new production, which promises to captivate audiences with its poignant storytelling and powerful performances.
