The Extraction universe is getting even bigger, and this time, Omar Sy is taking center stage. Netflix has officially greenlit a new action thriller series set in the high-stakes world of Extraction, with the Lupin and The Intouchables star leading the charge.
The yet-to-be-titled eight-episode series will follow Sy as a mercenary caught in the crossfire of warring factions and ruthless killers while navigating a high-risk mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Like its blockbuster predecessors, the series won’t just deliver adrenaline-pumping action—it will dive deep into the emotional toll of the job, exploring trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death decisions.
Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead, The Shield) has signed on as showrunner, while Sam Hargrave, who directed both Extraction films, is executive producing. Also on board as executive producers are Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi under AGBO, the Russos’ production company.
“I’m a very lucky man,” Mazzara said about joining the project. “Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have welcomed me into the AGBO family. The team at Netflix is truly the best I’ve ever worked with. Very lucky indeed.”
Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, VP of Scripted Series, added, “Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe. With Omar Sy leading the charge and our continued collaboration with the Russos and Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more high-octane adventures.”
The Extraction franchise, based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and the Russo brothers, has been a major player in Netflix’s action lineup. The first film, released in 2020, followed Chris Hemsworth’s black ops mercenary Tyler Rake on a dangerous rescue mission in Bangladesh. The 2023 sequel took the action to a new level, seeing Rake pull off another impossible mission—this time, breaking a family out of a heavily guarded prison.
Now, with Sy stepping in to lead this new chapter, the franchise is evolving into a larger interconnected world of mercenaries, each with their own brutal missions and personal demons.
This marks another example of Netflix expanding its successful original films into series, following the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before spin-off XO, Kitty and the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie.
With its action-packed legacy and a leading man like Omar Sy, this Extraction expansion is shaping up to be one wild ride. Buckle up.
