The rumor mills is churning that Ryan Coogler is eyeing a new franchise to adapt. According to Bloody Disgusting, in a recent interview with CBC’s On The Coast with Gloria Macarenko, X-Files creator Chris Carter said Ryan Coogler is developing a X-Files reboot.

“I just spoke to a young man… Ryan Coogler… who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

This is not the first time there were rumors of an X-files reboot. It was previously reported in 2020 that an animated adaptation of the show called The X-Files: Albuquerque was in the works. TV Line had explained in 2020, “The potential series will center an office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases too wacky, ridiculous or downright dopey for Mulder and Scully to bother with. They’re essentially the X-Files’ B-team.”

The project had been given a script commitment, with Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko (“Paradise PD”) attached to write the pilot episode and executive produce. However the current status of that project is unclear.

It’s possible that Coogler’s X-Files reboot could similarly continue the franchise with new lead stars while featuring guest appearances from the original show’s stars. This would depend on whether David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who played the show’s lead characters Mulder and Scully, respectively, would be interested in returning to the series.

Duchovny recently told ComicBook.com that for him, there’s no X-Files show without Anderson and Carter. Anderson has also previously cast doubt on ever returning to the role of Scully, stating that it feels like an old idea and that a new set of writers would need to be involved to make it feel fresh and progressive. However, Anderson’s prior comments suggest that she may be more open to getting involved with something like what Coogler is planning for the series.

While fans will have to wait for more details about the X-Files reboot, the news that Coogler is involved and aiming for a more diverse cast is sure to generate excitement and anticipation for what’s to come.
