Tamera Mowry-Housley is joining ABC’s Scrubs for a guest role in the show’s upcoming second season. She’ll play Dr. Steffie, a pediatric doctor who tries to persuade intern Tosh (Ava Bunn) to choose pediatrics as her specialty.
The casting news comes after ABC released the Season 2 trailer last week, which teases a major storyline: a health crisis for John C. McGinley’s Dr. Perry Cox. Season 2 premieres with two episodes Wednesday, September 30, at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT.
In the new season of the 30-minute revival, J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison), and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) have leveled up from interns to icons at Sacred Heart, now mentoring the next generation of doctors while navigating the everyday chaos of hospital life. Bunn’s Sam Tosh has also been promoted from recurring player to series regular alongside the original trio.
The cast is seeing some turnover heading into the new season. Joel Kim Booster (Dr. Kevin Park) and X Mayo (Charge Nurse Raymond) are not expected to return, while Keyla Monterroso Mejia (The Studio, Abbott Elementary) joins as a recurring guest star playing Mimi, Turk’s new surgical nurse, described as quirky, sassy, and a loyal, high-energy presence in the OR. John Higgins and Rachel Bilson, the latter playing a new character named Charlie, also join the recurring cast this season.
Several original-series veterans continue rounding out the ensemble as recurring players, including Neil Flynn as The Janitor and Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa, with Christa Miller returning as a guest star reprising Jordan Sullivan. Scott Foley also returns as recurring character Sean Kelly, alongside recurring players Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, and Amanda Morrow.
The Scrubs revival returned to ABC in February after 16 years off the air to strong reviews, holding a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and drew more than 11 million viewers in its first five days, one of the highest-rated ABC comedy premieres in recent years.
Bill Lawrence of Doozer Productions created the original series and executive produces the revival alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer, also of Doozer Productions. Braff, Faison, and Chalke also executive produce, along with Mike Royce, Mathew Harawitz, Randall Keenan Winston, and Michael Spiller. Aseem Batra serves as executive producer and showrunner. Scrubs is produced by 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios.
Mowry-Housley is best known for starring opposite her twin sister Tia Mowry in their breakout roles on Sister, Sister. She went on to series regular roles on Lifetime’s Strong Medicine and ABC Family’s Roommates and Melissa and Joey, and lent her voice to characters on Fox’s Family Guy and Cartoon Network’s Super Hero Squad Show. She also co-hosted the talk show The Real alongside Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon-Houghton, and Jeannie Mai, a role that earned the group a shared Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host. She’s repped by 3 Arts Entertainment, CAA, and Delshaw.
