The evolution of Black television is getting the deep dive it deserves in Seen and Heard, a two-part documentary executive produced by Issa Rae. Set to premiere at SXSW before streaming on Max, the documentary explores how Black creatives have not only been “seen” on screen but have fought to ensure their voices are truly “heard” behind the scenes.
Directed and produced by Giselle Bailey and Phil Bertelsen (Who Killed Malcolm X?), Seen and Heard features an impressive lineup of industry pioneers, including Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Lena Waithe, Cord Jefferson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Swizz Beatz, and the late Norman Lear. The documentary brings together showrunners, writers, actors, and producers to reflect on their personal experiences, the evolution of Black storytelling, and the challenges still ahead.
First announced in 2020, Seen and Heard will provide an in-depth look at Black representation in television—past, present, and future. Using archival footage, candid interviews, and verité-driven storytelling, the documentary offers both cultural commentary and a celebration of the creatives who have shaped American TV.
“Black people have such a rich, but often unacknowledged history in Hollywood,” said Rae. “We have defined American culture and influenced generations time and time again across the globe. I’m honored to pair with Ark Media to center and celebrate the achievements of those who paved a way for so many of us to tell our stories on television.”
Seen and Heard is executive produced by Rae, Montrel McKay (Issa Rae Productions), Jonathan Berry and David Becky (3 Arts Entertainment), Rachel Dretzin, John Maggio, John Ealer, and Nancy Abraham, among others. The documentary will debut at SXSW before making its way to Max, where it will further amplify the voices of Black creatives shaping today’s television landscape.
