Shonda Rhimes is staying put. The superproducer and her Shondaland production banner, which she leads alongside producing partner Betsy Beers, have renewed their overall deal with Netflix for five more years, running through 2031. Rhimes has been based at Netflix since 2017, having originally moved from her longtime home at Disney.
The new deal covers the exclusive development of series, feature films and games for Netflix, along with merchandise and live events tied to Shondaland’s IP. Netflix will also continue supporting Shondaland’s inclusion initiatives, including the Ladder Program, which trains underrepresented below-the-line creatives.
The renewal comes as Rhimes and Netflix continue to benefit from the massive success of Bridgerton, one of the streamer’s most watched series of all time. The franchise, including prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, has amassed 610 million views since 2023, with Seasons 1 and 3 ranking among the top ten most watched English-language Netflix shows ever. Season 4 debuted to over 100 million views earlier this year and Season 5 is currently filming in London, where Netflix built Rhimes a studio complex. The season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), with a sixth season already renewed.
Beyond Bridgerton, Shondaland’s Netflix slate includes Inventing Anna, starring Julia Garner as Anna Delvey, The Residence, the murder mystery drama starring Uzo Aduba, Emmy-winning documentary Black Barbie and Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, chronicling legendary choreographer Debbie Allen. An upcoming Grey’s Anatomy Texas spinoff, created by Rhimes and current showrunner Meg Marinis, is also set to land at Netflix in 2027.
The renewal solidifies Rhimes’ standing at the platform following the departures of other top creators, including the Duffer Brothers, who signed an overall deal with Paramount in 2025, and Ryan Murphy, who moved back to Disney in 2023.
