Despite shows like ‘King Shaka’ and ‘The Wood’ being axed at Showtime, the upcoming movie Heist 88, which is inspired by true events finds a new home at Showtime

As to why this film was picked up, is because it falls into one of the three new programming lanes that Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of Paramount Global’s Media Networks recently outlined for Showtime specifically. Showtime, which is merging with sister streamer Paramount+ and will be renamed Paramount+ with Showtime, has cut much of its development slate. It has shifted its programming strategy to focus on three lanes: complex characters and subversive antiheroes, high-stakes powerful worlds, and culturally diverse takes.

Heist 88 falls under culturally diverse takes — similar to their staple series, The Chi.

Written by Dwayne Johnson-Cochran and directed by Menhaj Huda, Heist 88 stars Courtney B. Vance, Keesha Sharp, Keith David, Bentley Green, Xavier Clyde, Nican Robinson and Precious Way. The film will tell the story of one of the largest bank heists ever to occur in the United States.

Heist 88 centers on Jeremy Horne (Vance), a criminal mastermind with an innate ability to convince anyone to do just about anything. Ahead of his 1988 prison stint, Horne decides to pull one last job. He goes on to recruit four young bank employees to steal close to $80 million dollars via a sophisticated takedown of the banking wire system.

Sharp will play Bree Barnes, an elegant, smart, political consultant that possesses a criminal mind and is Jeremy’s love interest. David will portray Buddha Ray (Raymond Oliver), a master safecracker and mentor to Jeremy.

Robinson will play Rick Windom, a young loyal bank employee working in “the back of the bank” for nearly six years with dreams of becoming a stockbroker. And Way will portray LaDonna Sanders, a beautiful, bright, bank employee who is ambitious but unseen at First Chicago Bank.

The partnership between Paramount Media Networks’ MTV Entertainment Studios and Bassett Vance Productions stems from Paramount’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative, a global effort to provide opportunities and help advance content creation for a new generation of BIPOC and women leaders in front of and behind the camera.
