Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams has adapted Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s best-selling book, “Stamped From the Beginning,” for a dynamic exploration of the history of anti-Black racist ideas. The project boasts the talents of executive producers Mara Brock Akil and Dr. Ibram X. Kendi.

The documentary, directed by Roger Ross Williams and produced by Alisa Payne, Roger Ross Williams, and David Teague, is scheduled to debut in select U.S. theaters on November 10 and will become available on Netflix from November 20.

Dr. Kendi’s acclaimed work, a New York Times bestseller, published in 2016, offers a comprehensive account of anti-Black racist ideas and their profound influence on American history. Williams’ documentary adaptation employs innovative animation techniques, merging live action with period-appropriate art to shed light on both well-known and lesser-known historical figures and moments. Guided by leading female academics and activists, such as Dr. Angela Davis, Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, Brittany Packnett Cunningham, Dr. Jennifer L. Morgan, and Dr. Kendi himself, the documentary provides a compelling examination of the development and entrenchment of racist tropes and imagery in American culture.
