Stephen McKinley Henderson, Margaret Avery Among 14 Cast in ‘A Classic Spy’

Two-time Tony nominee Stephen McKinley Henderson and Academy Award nominee Margaret Avery are set to join Ted Danson in Mike Schur’s upcoming comedy series, “A Classic Spy.” The show, based on the 2021 Oscar-nominated documentary “The Mole Agent,” follows Charles (Danson), a retired man turned undercover detective.

The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Stephanie Beatriz, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Sally Struthers, Eugene Cordero, John Getz, Susan Ruttan, Lori Tan Chinn, Clyde Kusatsu, Marc Evan Jackson, and Jama Williamson. The series reunites Cordero and Jackson with Danson and Schur, who previously collaborated on “The Good Place” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

In “A Classic Spy,” Ellis plays Emily, a mother adjusting to her father’s unexpected career move. Beatriz is Didi, the managing director of a retirement residence, and Estrada portrays Julie, a private investigator. Henderson plays Calbert, a transplant from Washington, D.C., while Struthers embodies Virginia, the life of the party.

Other roles include Cordero as Emily’s husband Joel, Avery as Virginia’s friend Florance, Getz as resident lothario Elliott, Ruttan as glamorous Gladys, Chinn as resident council president Susan, Kusatsu as Princeton grad Grant, Jackson as client Evan, and Williamson as Activities Director Beatrice.

Produced by Universal Television, “A Classic Spy” is executive produced by Mike Schur, Morgan Sackett, David Miner, Maite Alberdi, Marcela Santibañez, Julie Goldman, and Christopher Clements. With this impressive ensemble, the series promises an engaging blend of comedy and intrigue.
