Ant-Man and the Wasp star Hannah John-Kamen is taking up another comic book story. Kamen is cast as the title role in the adaptation of the sword-wielding comic book fantasy hero Red Sonja for Millennium Films. Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith created Sonya in the early 1970s by for Marvel’s “Conan the Barbarian” comics. She was fiery and strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Conan while refusing his advances, while also styled appealing to the largely heterosexual male readership. In a short amount of time her popularity grew, so much that the duo gave her her own spinoff series. The Red Sonja and Conan comics eventually left Marvel and landed at Dynamite Entertainment, which is where Millennium is basing its adaptation. READ: Taylour Paige Lands Female Lead Role in Toxic Avenger Remake Opposite Peter Dinklage Joey Soloway is directing based off a script he co-wrote with Tasha Huo. “Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja,” said Soloway in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.” He continued, “There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja’s ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet.” Soloway also noted that Sonja is “an ancient heroine with an epic calling.” This isn't the first adaptation of Red Sonja. In 1985 tt was adapted to a feature film starring Brigitte Nielsen as the title role, with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a supporting role. Richard Fleischer directed that adaptation. Luke Lieberman on behalf of Red Sonja LLC, Nick Barrucci of Dynamite Entertainment, Dorothy Canton are also executive producing. The producing team includes Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon, and Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman of Campbell Grobman Films. Topple’s Andrea Sperling and Millennium’ Yariv Lerner, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Joe Gatta, and Tanner Mobley are also producing. No other casting details have been given at this time.
