Disney+ has announced Tamara Smart as the latest addition to the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians for its second season. Smart will portray Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus (the late Lance Reddick portrayed him in season 1), in a recurring role.
Author Rick Riordan, who penned the Percy Jackson books, emphasized the importance of casting the right actor for such a central character. “Thalia Grace is one of the most critical figures in the Percy Jackson universe,” Riordan said in a statement. “She’s a fierce warrior with a rebellious spirit. From the moment we saw Tamara Smart in the role, it was clear she was the perfect fit—she brought an undeniable energy to the character.”
Smart joins a growing ensemble, including Daniel Diemer, cast as Percy’s half-brother Tyson, as well as returning stars Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase), and Aryan Simhadri (Grover Underwood).
Season 1 featured the late Lance Reddick as Zeus, and Smart expressed the personal significance of stepping into the role of Reddick’s on-screen daughter. The two had previously worked together on Resident Evil. “Lance and I always spoke about working together again, so to play his daughter once more as Thalia feels incredibly meaningful. I want to keep his memory alive through this role,” Smart shared.
Production for Season 2, which adapts The Sea of Monsters, began in August in Vancouver. The storyline will continue to follow Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood as they face new challenges, including Percy discovering his cyclops sibling and the looming threat of Kronos. Thalia’s history will also be explored, including her transformation into the protective tree that shields Camp Half-Blood.
Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is set to bring more action and emotional depth, as the trio embarks on a perilous journey through the Sea of Monsters.
