Tax season is back, and so is Christian Wolff. The math-genius-turned-assassin, played by Ben Affleck, makes his long-awaited return in The Accountant 2. While you’re crunching numbers for your tax return, Wolff is busy cracking skulls and solving murders—same energy, different stakes.
The film will make its world premiere at SXSW on March 8 before hitting theaters on April 25.
In The Accountant 2, Christian Wolff is called out of his quiet life after an old acquaintance is found dead with a cryptic message: “Find the accountant.” Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) needs Wolff’s help, and this time, he’s teaming up with his estranged (and equally dangerous) brother Brax (Jon Bernthal) to unravel a deadly conspiracy. And trust—it’s not just the IRS after him.
According to the official synopsis, the brothers uncover a ruthless network of killers who won’t stop until every secret is buried. The only problem? Wolff doesn’t go down without a fight. Directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Bill Dubuque, this sequel amps up the action while keeping that signature mix of high-stakes drama and precision takedowns.
J.K. Simmons is back as Ray King, but based on the trailer, he may not be sticking around too long. Daniella Pineda also joins the cast. The film is rated R—because what else would you expect from an assassin who balances budgets by day and bodies by night?
The original The Accountant was a surprise hit in 2016. Despite mixed reviews, the film grossed $155 million worldwide on a $44 million budget. Fans loved Affleck’s portrayal of a socially awkward but brilliant numbers man with a violent streak. Wolff became an unlikely action hero, and the movie’s mix of complex plot twists and well-choreographed fight scenes earned it a cult following.
While critics didn’t always agree (The Accountant was called “inadvertently laughable” by some, but we know better), audiences leaned in. And after years of whispers about a sequel, The Accountant 2 is finally here.
Produced by Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity along with Lynette Howell Taylor, Mark Williams, and J.K. Simmons, The Accountant 2 promises bigger stakes, deeper family drama, and more intense action.
