The show centers on Nella, an editorial assistant at a venerated Manhattan-based publishing company, Wagner Books, who is tired of being the only Black woman at her workplace. She’s initially ecstatic to be joined by Hazel, who was born and raised in Harlem, but when she begins rising through the ranks, Nella begins to spiral and uncovers something sinister taking place at the company.

Harris is co-writing the series which is loosely based on her time at the Penguin Random House-owned publisher Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. The book was published by Atria/Simon & Schuster in 2021.

Harris, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, and Adam Fishbach will also executive produce the series.

The Onyx Collective is Disney’s recently launched brand, dedicated to releasing work from creators of color and underrepresented voices. Led by Tara Duncan, Onyx Collective will be presented as a content brand on Hulu. Reasonable Doubt was put on a script-to-series development track by Hulu in July with the opening of a writers room, consisting of an all-Black staff led by Mohamed. The project was originally set up at ABC during the 2019-20 development season, and Mohamed reworked her original script for streaming as Reasonable Doubt was taken on by Onyx Collective.
