Netflix has dropped the official trailer for “Thelma the Unicorn,” an animated musical comedy directed by Jared Hess and Lynn Wang. The film, based on the book by Aaron Blabey, tells the story of Thelma, a small-time pony with big dreams of becoming a music star.

In the trailer, we are introduced to Thelma, voiced by singer-songwriter Brittany Howard, as she navigates the challenges of fame after being transformed into a unicorn. The star-studded voice cast includes Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon, Fred Armisen, Zach Galifianakis, and Jon Heder.

The film’s directors, Hess and Wang, known for their work on “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Unikitty!”, respectively, bring a quirky and heartfelt touch to the story. Hess emphasizes the theme of self-acceptance, stating that “Thelma feels like an outcast, she doesn’t feel comfortable in her own skin… We try to stay true to the themes of Aaron Blabey’s book, which is all about how you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not in order to be loved and achieve your dreams.”

“Thelma the Unicorn” is a collaboration between Mikros Animation, Netflix Animation, Buzzfeed Studios, Matchbox Hero, and Scholastic Entertainment, promising a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience for viewers of all ages.

The film is set to premiere on Netflix on May 17th, 2024, check out some first look images below.
