Tyler Perry Donates $750K to Prevent Displacement of Atlanta’s Low-Income Seniors Near His Production Studio

Tyler Perry is donating $750,000 to help prevent the displacement of low-income seniors in Atlanta. The donation is intended to assist seniors living in the area surrounding Tyler Perry Studios. That’s due the rising property taxes in this area which have become a significant factor in displacing long-time residents.

Perry’s generous donation will pay off all back property taxes for every low-income senior in the city, including county and school taxes. Additionally, he has pledged to donate approximately $500,000 each year over the next five years to freeze property taxes for 100 low-income seniors in Atlanta for the next 20 years.

Invest Atlanta Partnership, a non-profit organization that focuses on economic development in the city, will oversee the funds, involved in this recurring donation.

Perry personally reached out to Atlanta mayor Andre Dickens to inquire about providing assistance to seniors in need.

Perry was recently awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the Oscars in 2021. And in his speech, he stated, “When I set out to help someone, it is my intention to do just that. I’m not trying to do anything other than meet somebody at their humanity.”

This latest donation is just another example of Perry’s commitment to helping those in need. In a previous interview, Perry revealed that his mother taught him to refuse hate and blanket judgment. “And in this time, with all of the internet and social media and algorithms and everything that wants us to think a certain way, the 24-hour news cycle, it is my hope that all of us would teach our kids, and I want to remember just refuse hate, don’t hate anybody,” he added. “Don’t hate anybody.”
