Tyler Perry, the multi-talented entrepreneur, has made it to Forbes’ “World’s 10 Highest-Paid Entertainers” list for the second year in a row. The list includes notable names from the world of music, cinema, and digital media, with a combined earning of $1.35 billion this year. Interestingly, Jay-Z and Kanye West, who featured in the list previously, did not make the cut this year.

Perry is not only the “sole billionaire” in the list but also the only Black entertainer. The spotlight is due to a successful year, supported by streams of income from his films, BET TV shows, and Tyler Perry Studios. Perry’s reported earnings of $175 million have earned him the third spot on the list.

Perry’s achievements do not stop here. He recently added 37 acres to his 330-acre Atlanta-based production backlot for $8.4 million. The expansion is expected to support an entertainment, retail, and restaurant district, making it a profitable venture. Although the sale was completed in 2021, the property title was issued in December 2022.

Another key factor contributing to Perry’s success is his ownership of his creative output. As per Forbes, he has full ownership of over 1,200 episodes of television, 22 feature films, at least 24 stage plays, and Tyler Perry Studios. In a recent interview with Forbes, Perry mentioned, “I own the lights. I own the sets. So that’s where the difference is. Because I own everything, my returns are higher.”

Perry also has a deal with ViacomCBS, as the outlet details, which will earn him $150 million annually to create at least 90 episodes for BET and other Viacom networks until 2024. Once the deal runs its course, the rights will return to Perry. In a statement, Perry expressed his excitement about partnering with ViacomCBS, stating that they have a rich tradition of reaching his audience through their TV, film, and digital platforms. He also mentioned that he looks forward to continuing his work with Lionsgate and OWN on a non-exclusive basis.

Perry’s recent achievements are a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and creative brilliance. His ownership of his output, strategic business moves, and immense talent have earned him a spot amongst the world’s highest-paid entertainers. Perry’s success also paves the way for more Black entertainers to break through the ranks and be recognized for their contributions.
