Two of DC Studios’ originally announced television projects have hit a significant wall. Waller, the Suicide Squad spinoff starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Paradise Lost, the Wonder Woman-adjacent series set on the island of Themyscira, are no longer in active development at HBO, multiple outlets have confirmed.
The projects could potentially still happen at some point in the future but are no longer priorities for DC Studios or HBO. Neither show was ever ordered to series. The news was first reported by The Ankler.
Waller was first reported to be in the works in May 2022 and was written by Christal Henry, known for Watchmen, and Jeremy Carver, known for Supernatural. It would have featured Team Peacemaker alongside Davis’s Amanda Waller. Paradise Lost was unveiled as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s initial DC slate in January 2023 and was described as being in the vein of Game of Thrones, exploring the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women before the birth of Wonder Woman. As recently as late April, Gunn had described Paradise Lost as being in “extreme development.”
The two shows join Booster Gold as projects from Gunn and Safran’s original 2023 slate that are no longer moving forward, though DC Studios is reportedly still searching for a new creative team to potentially revive Booster Gold. Of the original 10 projects announced, four have been released, namely Superman, Supergirl, Creature Commandos and Lanterns, which premieres this Sunday on HBO.
DC Studios is currently focused on other corners of its expanding universe. A Jimmy Olsen true crime mockumentary series starring Skyler Gisondo is currently filming, with Jimmy Tatro playing Gorilla Grodd. The animated series Mister Miracle is also in development. James Gunn is meanwhile working on Man of Tomorrow, a sequel to both Superman and Supergirl set for 2027.
A proper Wonder Woman film is still in the works separately, with Supergirl scribe Ana Nogueira attached to write.
