Warner Bros. has emerged victorious in a fierce bidding war for the rights to Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s upcoming mysterious-genre film. The untitled movie, based on an original script by Coogler, has been described as an “original genre film,” with plot details tightly under wraps.
While specific details about the plot remain elusive, sources suggest the film is a period thriller, possibly set in the Jim Crow-era South and involving the undead. Rumors of anime influences, inspired by Jordan’s known passion for the genre, add an extra layer of anticipation.
This project marks the fifth collaboration between Coogler and Jordan, their creative partnership beginning with the critically acclaimed “Fruitvale Station” in 2013 and extending to the “Creed” and “Black Panther” franchises. The dynamic duo’s success has resonated at the box office, with their collective efforts amassing over $2.4 billion globally.
The untitled film, produced by Coogler’s Proximity Media alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, will see Coogler return to the director’s chair for the first time since 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The production is set to commence in April, with an intriguing ownership component that may see Coogler regain certain rights over time.
Warner Bros. Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, who previously greenlit “Creed III,” expressed enthusiasm for their continued collaboration with Coogler and Jordan. The studio’s recent successes and ongoing projects, including partnerships with Tom Cruise and director Jon Chu, solidify its commitment to diverse and engaging content.
