Warner Bros Officially Sets ‘The Bodyguard’ Remake — Casting Still Under Wraps

It’s official — The Bodyguard is getting the reboot treatment. Warner Bros has confirmed plans to revive the beloved 1992 romantic thriller that originally starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. And leading the charge? Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour director Sam Wrench, with a script from Juror No. 2 writer Jonathan A. Abrams.

The news came straight from Warner Bros co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy during a Friday interview, where they laid out the studio’s ongoing strategy: build on classic IP while still carving out room for bold originals. No word yet on who’ll step into the iconic roles of Frank Farmer and Rachel Marron, but let’s just say — all eyes will be on this casting process.

Given the original film’s legacy (a global box office haul of $411 million and two Oscar noms), expectations are sky-high. And with the role of Rachel originally created for a real-life music icon, you can bet this remake will be a magnet for today’s biggest singers. Whether that’s someone like Swift — whose name is already floating in the rumor mill — or another powerhouse vocalist, Warner Bros clearly wants lightning to strike twice.

The original film, directed by Mick Jackson and written by Star Wars scribe Lawrence Kasdan, followed Costner’s character, a former Secret Service agent hired to protect Houston’s superstar singer Rachel Marron from a relentless stalker. Part romance, part thriller, the film was a pop culture moment — thanks in no small part to its chart-topping soundtrack.

And speaking of that soundtrack — The Bodyguard’s musical legacy is nothing short of legendary. It remains the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, with anthems like “I Will Always Love You,” “I Have Nothing,” and “Run to You” still commanding attention decades later.

This remake is part of a larger trend at Warner Bros, where the studio is leaning into its iconic vault. Other legacy projects in motion include The Matrix (with Drew Goddard at the helm), the long-awaited Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and a Practical Magic reunion for Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. There’s also movement on Gremlins and The Goonies — with Chris Columbus involved — and fresh reimaginings like an Oceans Eleven prequel starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and a Them! remake produced by Matt Reeves.

Whether you’re excited, skeptical, or just curious, one thing’s for sure — this Bodyguard reboot will have folks talking. And with the right cast and a fresh yet respectful take, it might just give a whole new generation something to sing about.
