We’re Back at Hillman: First Look at the A Different World Sequel Reveals the Legacy Cast Returning This September

Class is back in session. Netflix has confirmed that its long-awaited sequel to A Different World is premiering this fall, and the first look images are here, showing the original cast reunited in The Pit, the iconic Hillman hangout where so many of the original series’ most memorable moments unfolded.

The 10-episode single-camera series returns to the halls of the fictional Hillman College, where a new generation of students navigates ambition, identity and the weight of legacy. At the center of the story is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of fan-favorite couple Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert-Wayne. As a Hillman freshman, Deborah must carve out her own identity while living in the long shadow of her parents’ storied time on campus.

The first look image is filled with nostalgia, showing Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, and Charnele Brown back together in The Pit, instantly transporting longtime fans back to one of television’s most beloved fictional HBCUs. More than just a campus hangout, The Pit served as the heart of Hillman, where friendships were tested, romances blossomed and conversations about race, politics, identity and young adulthood unfolded across the original series’ run.

The returning legacy cast also includes, Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport, Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, Karen Malina White as Charmaine Brown and Ajai Sanders as Gina Deveaux.

Joining the new generation at Hillman are Tichina Arnold as Darlene Duvall, Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer, Method Man as Coach Coles and Norman Nixon Jr. as Professor Baptiste, alongside a fresh ensemble of new students including Alijah Kai Haggins, Cornell Young IV,Kennedi Reece, Jordan Aaron Hall, Chibuikem Uche, Vincent Jamal Hooper, Elijah J. Roberts, Renee Harrison, Famecia Ward, Dasan Frazier and Joshua Suiter.

Behind the camera, Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer. Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, returns to helm three episodes including the premiere. Original series writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood also return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner. Production wrapped in Atlanta, Georgia.

Originally debuting in 1987 as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, A Different World became a defining portrait of Black college life and HBCU culture for an entire generation, inspiring countless students to pursue higher education and shining a national spotlight on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Its influence can still be felt today, with many HBCU graduates citing the show as part of their decision to attend.

A Different World returns to Netflix this September.
