Whoopi Goldberg Backs BLKFAM, The First-Ever Black-Owned, Family-Focused Streaming Service

Today marks the official launch of BLKFAM, a groundbreaking, ad-supported streaming service founded by digital media veteran Larry Adams, featuring Whoopi Goldberg as a prominent equity partner. Positioned as the first and only Black-owned, Black-focused family streaming platform, BLKFAM aims to entertain, educate, and celebrate Black American family-friendly content with a focus on authenticity, inclusivity, and empowerment.

In response to recent Nielsen data revealing a lack of accurate representation for Black audiences in mainstream media, BLKFAM seeks to bridge this gap by providing family-friendly content backed by data and artificial intelligence. Despite Black audiences being among the highest consumers of media and TV, there is a prevailing sentiment of misrepresentation, prompting the creation of BLKFAM as a solution to address this underserved market.

The streaming service launches with an extensive content library featuring over 20 syndicated series, 1000+ hours of new animation titles, and original music-driven content. It also introduces dozens of new animated characters of color and diverse gender experiences. Ten new original live action and animated series are currently in development, promising a continuous stream of engaging content throughout the year. BLKFAM’s content spans various genres, including investigative journalism, fitness and wellness series, Black history, children’s and adult animation, sitcoms, reality shows, and music programs – all curated through the lens of the Black experience.

Larry Adams, Founder, and CEO of BLKFAM expresses his motivation behind the platform, stating, “Black culture and content are so often stereotyped, siloed, or written off – so I wanted to create a platform where my kids and I can be entertained without having to face those same daily biases.”

EGOT winner, business mogul, and Black icon Whoopi Goldberg joins BLKFAM as an Equity Partner, taking an active role in steering the creative development of exclusive programming for the platform. Goldberg states, “I am honored to partner with BLKFAM to assist in the creative direction of curated diverse content – for Black culture to be brought to broader audiences.”

BLKFAM has forged partnerships with The Africa Channel, PLAYWATCH KIDS, and ATTN:, expanding its content offerings to include stories from the global Black diaspora. This collaboration aims to bring educational, fun, and empowering shows in animation and documentary styles, featuring diverse characters such as Gabby Galactic, Marvelous Light, Black History Beats, Kembe, and more.

Starting today, BLKFAM is accessible on various platforms, including iOS, Android, Amazon Prime Video Channels, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, YouTube TV, Samsung Smart TVs, Vizio, and LG, ensuring widespread access to its unique and inclusive content.
