Warner Bros. has released the first teaser for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular video game, ‘A Minecraft Movie.’ Set to the tune of The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour,” the trailer creatively and creepily introduces audiences to the Minecraft universe, bringing the game’s iconic blocky style to life on the big screen.
Directed by Jared Hess (‘Napoleon Dynamite,’ ‘Nacho Libre’), ‘A Minecraft Movie’ stars a diverse cast, including Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. The film, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, will be released in theaters and IMAX in North America on April 4, 2025, with international releases starting April 2, 2025.
The movie’s plot revolves around four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—who are transported through a mysterious portal into Minecraft’s Overworld, a vibrant and imaginative cubic landscape. Guided by expert crafter Steve (Black), they must navigate this world and protect it from enemies like Piglins and Zombies. Their journey challenges them to embrace their unique creativity, a key to their survival in both the game and their real lives.
The teaser showcases Black’s Steve introducing himself with a dramatic “I… am Steve,” to the groans of his fellow adventurers. Jack Black, whose roles in game-to-film adaptations like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Jumanji: The Next Level,” and “Borderlands” have made him Hollywood’s go-to actor for such projects, brings his comedic chops to the role of the expert crafter.
Behind the scenes, Hess has assembled a top-tier creative team, including cinematographer Enrique Chediak, production designer Grant Major, and VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon. Music for the film is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, with Gabe Hilfer and Karyn Rachtman supervising. The movie is produced by a lineup that includes Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, and Jason Momoa.
“Minecraft” first debuted in 2011 and has since become the best-selling video game of all time, with over 140 million monthly users.
